Project details

Gasoducto Bajanorte is part of a 355 kilometer (220 mile) transportation system that serves the energy needs of Baja California. The system begins at an interconnection with El Paso Natural Gas Co. near Ehrenberg, Arizona and terminates at an interconnection with Transportadora de Gas Natural de Baja California (TGN) south of Tijuana. This 30- and 36-inch diameter pipeline system and 21,000 HP compressor station has the capacity to deliver about 500 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

Gasoducto Bajanorte, the Mexican portion of the total natural gas transmission system, is 225 kilometers (140 miles) long and 30 inches in diameter.

The Mexican portion of the pipeline project starts at an interconnection with North Baja Pipeline LLC west of Algodones and goes west through the cities of Mexicali and Tecate, terminating at an interconnection with the Transportadora De Gas Natural (TGN) Pipeline System in Tijuana. The TGN System redelivers natural gas to southwest to Rosarito or north to the US/Mexico international border.

This pipeline delivers clean-burning natural gas to Baja California to fuel future economic growth while also helping the environment by reducing emissions. Natural gas can be used instead of fuel oil and other fuels that do not burn as cleanly as natural gas. For example, when used as a power plant fuel, natural gas is 2.6 times cleaner than fuel oil (the most commonly used fuel in the area) in terms of nitrogen oxides (NOx), six times cleaner in terms of particulate matter larger than 10 microns (PM10), and 3,500 times cleaner in terms of sulfur dioxide (SO2).
